Moose, elk, and deer produce a new set of antlers (mainly males) every year. When the new antlers grow, they are covered in short hair resembling "velvet." Hence, they are called "velvet antler." It grows rapidly from March to July and then becomes hard and falls off before spring. The fully-grown antlers are harvested by licensed veterinarians who carefully remove the bottom part.
