L-Theanine Extracted from Green Tea Leaves


L-Theanine is extracted from tea leaves. It was originally discovered as a major component of green tea in 1949 and L-theanine in green tea can have a calming and relaxing effect. While young tea leaves typically contain more caffeine, older leaves tend to have higher levels of theanine. In terms of commercial production, theanine can be obtained when the tea leaves are in their budding stage.

In a study by a Japanese research team published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, university students who took L-theanine had lower levels of anxiety and less increase in blood pressure compared to those who took a placebo when exposed to stress, both mentally and physically.
Another Japanese study on pharmacology, biochemistry, and behavior showed that graduate students who took L-theanine were less anxious when performing tasks that caused stress in a pharmacy setting compared to those who took a placebo (measured by surveys on stress and salivary markers).
According to a Canadian study in the Alternative Medicine Review, L-theanine improved sleep in boys with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
